The thought process of all of this goes through the brain of the male in the forebrain specifically. The hypothalamus is responsible for linking the brain and the endocrine system to control things like coincidentally; hunger, thirst, sleep and sexual behavior. Since they're all connected by one part of the brain, it's easy to assume they have an effect on each other like a lacking of sleep and increased hunger causing stress and an increased sexual appetite. It influences many emotional responses and could lower a male's standards as bad as that sounds. Also, It is known that a woman is actually more attractive when ovulating because she appears more confident due to her fertility if you speak of a women's reproductive potential, so big or small, they can be found attractive.

A very clever and plausible alternative explanation. Perhaps this could be tested by using an intervention to temporarily lower a man's perception of his own mate (market?) value. E.g. give participants a bogus test followed by false and unflattering feedback. Then see if their standards of attractiveness decline. On the other hand, this does sound a bit cruel, although I've read of many experiments that have done worse!

Thanks for sharing this interesting viewpoint. I guess when men are under stress, they are "hungry" for anything. The more, the better.
